Sri Gour Govinda Swamyastakam

Sri Kalakantha prabhu

Sri Gour Govinda Swamyastakam

Re-posted from www.gourgovindaswami.org

This astakam was composed by Sri Kalakantha prabhu and originally appeared as his Vyasa puja offering to His Divine Grace Srila Gour Govinda Swami

Srila Gour Govinda Swamyastakam
(by Sri Kalakantha prabhu)

kancanam sutanuh gambhirya badanam mundita siram
gairika dharanam lalate gopitilaka sundaram,
kanthe puspamalaya sobhitam bhakta-jana citasparsitam,
vande srila goura govinda swamine namo namaste.

I offer my respectful obeisances unto the lotus feet of Srila Goura Govinda Swami Maharaja, whose bodily colour is like gold. He is very grave, his head is shaved, and he dresses in saffron with gopi-tilaka beautifying his forehead. A beautifully fragrant flower garland surrounds his neck, attracting the hearts of all devotees.

parityaktam svadhanam yauban-jibanam sukham bibhabam,
indriyalalasam tatha gramya-barta ca barjita,
nidraharadi bijitam sada hari-kirtan priyam,
vande srila goura govinda swamine namo namaste.

I offer my respectful obeisances to the lotus feet of Srila Goura Govinda Swami Maharaja, who likes to glorify Sri Hari by describing Vedic literature (sastra), by noting the essence of sastra, and by chanting harinama always. For this he has given up wealth, family members, youth, material happiness, sense gratification, topics other than Krsna and has also given up sleeping and eating.

purna gurukrpa goura-krpa ca krpa govindam ba
krpatraya mritimanta, goura govinda swami namni,
radha-krsna yasaya hrdaye baddha nityam param bhagavatam,
vande srila goura govinda swamine namo namaste.

Srila Gour Govinda Swami has achieved three full mercies, i.e. from Lord Gouranga Mahaprabhu, Lord Govindadeva and from Snla Prabhupada. He is the embodiment of these three mercies, named as Goura Govinda Swami. By the mercy of Lord Gouranga, his name is Goura. By the mercy of Lord Govinda, his name is Govinda. By the mercy of Snla Prabhupada (his spiritual master) he is Swami. Hence Radha and Krsna have been bound up in his heart. I offer my respectful humble obeisances unto his lotus feet, which are the embodiment of these three mercies.

nana-sastra byakhya nipunei debanam parivestitam,
jananam mangal karinei dhiram patitam pavanam,
praptam ya sah parampara haripadeika sebakah,
vande srila goura govinda swamine namo namaste.

I offer my respectful humble obeisances unto the lotus feet of Srila Goura Govinda Swami, who is very expert in describing the Vedic scriptures (sastric injunctions, essence of sastra). When he does so the demigods surround him to hear the necterean descriptions. He is wise and does all-auspiciousness to the people, being a deliverer of all degraded souls. Having accepted the real disciplic succession, he engages himself always in the service of Lord Hari

srila prabhupada preritehi pradanartham krsna-naka
krparnave dhritva avatirna kalau dinatarine,
cintayanta mam padarajam nityadasoham
vande srila goura govinda swamine namo namaste.

Srila A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada has sent his dear disciple Srilla Goura Govinda Swami here (to Bhubaneswar) to distribute the holy name of Sri Krsna. He appeared, carrying an ocean of mercy, to deliver the most distressed and degraded souls of this age of Kali. Myself being one of the most degraded souls, please think me as a speck of dust at his lotus feet. I am his eternal servant. I offer my respectful obeisances unto his lotus feet.

harinam rasamrta panarata sada sarvada
bitaranam harinam mahausadhi badhha-jivanam
rudati ca hrdaya yasaya jivanam dukham dristya
vande srila gour govinda swamine namo namaste.

I offer my respectful obeisances unto the lotus feet of Sri Srimad Goura Govinda Swami Maharaja who is always busy drinking the nectar of the holy names of Krsna and distributing that nectar to the conditioned souls, declaring it the supremely perfect medicine to cure all diseases in this material ocean of miseries. His heart is crying seeing the distressed condition of the living entities.

paramhamsa acharyah svadan madhurya lilamrtam,
patitodharane jatibesam sisya sisya karoti,
palayati ye guru-engya it sa bandya sada sarvada,
vande srila goura govinda swamine namo namaste

I offer my respectful humble obeisances to the lotus feet of Srila Goura Govinda Swami Maharaja, who is, without doubt a Paramahamsa. He accepted sannyasa only to deliver the fallen souls, by accepting them as disciples, according to the orders of his spiritual master Srila A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada. A spiritual master like him, who follows the orders of his spiritual master should always be worshipped.

hrdays pabitram darsana yasaya vasudhadi tirthana
smrti laveta sri krsna nama ca vaisnavottamam
debaha bai gayanti guna yasya pramami sada-aham;
vande srila goura govinda swamine namo namaste.

I offer my respectful humble obeisances unto the lotus feet of Sri Srimad Goura Govinda Swami Maharaja, by whose mere darsana, one can purify his heart whose residence becomes a tirtha (a holy place); one can chant the Hare Krsna maha-mantra by his mere darsana only, and who is a vaisnava of highest calibre (uttama-adhikari) The demigods continuously glorify him. I offer my respectful obeisances always, unto his lotus feet.

kalakantha dasa biracitam goura govinda swamyastakam,
acirat sa laveta bhakti pathati ya trisandhyam

This “Goura Govinda Swamyastakam’ has been composed by Sri Kalakantha Das. One who recites this Swamyastakam, in tri-sandhya (morning, noon & evening) will without doubt get bhakti very soon.

Srila Prabhupada's instructions were more specific and elaborate; and included 1. Brass industry rebuilt; by acquiring brass Deities on all altars and encouraging the old crafts 2. Red Sandstone buildings / temples 3. Just like Krsna Balarama, Vrndavana, but sandstone.

Perhaps if Jayapataka Swami had not taken one million rupees from us in 1978, these could have been done more completely? I do not know if it was ever returned to us...

In 1977, Srila Gour Govinda Swami was not giving classes to the Western devotees in Bhubaneswara; when I inquired about this, he said in a happy and humble mood; my Godbrothers from the West are my gurus and superior men, I cannot be giving classes! How can I be giving classes to my Godbrothers? His mood was  that of maha-bhagavata. It was only slowly bit by bit that we were able to bring him down so to speak, in order to preach including to the Western devotees. This is my own terminology, I am not trying to be siddhantic about such things that i do not know.

Srila Gour Govinda did not act like the big Guru etc with us, at all, ever! He was always the joyfully smiling, gentle, scholarly, solidly situated, perfectly faithful, simple, kind, unassuming, expecting no service, perfect Vaisnava sannyasi gentleman and older brother. I miss his warm and kind ways towards us all, like I miss my own family that i never had. I and everyone around knew he was a saintly pure devotee, there was no question.

Once, in about 1994,  when he visited Vancouver, same area in Canada where Padmapani and Vasudeva dasa and Bhaktin Doreen and Bhakta Harry had a small Audiology office and hearing aid business, I owned by Krsna's grace and sent Bhubaneswara monthly some $200.  I was not even aware of his visit, no one told me, apparently he was heard to remark to one disicple, "Where is Tamohara dasa? Has he also left me ? " It was during a time when the GBC's were banning and abusing him. Had I known he was in the city, I could have gone to see him and invite him to see the  offices etc.

My relationship with him was always simple and respectful and close like with an older brother / Guru, but there was also some dark mood of seperation element that crept in sooner or later...

Tamohara Dasa In Bhubaneswara ISKCON ashrama, 1977 to 1980, we had one large earthenware reddish jar, with a long neck and round body. Vaisnava dasa would hop on the bike i had gotten donated and ride to Kundagiri wells to get fresh water every day or three, carrying it back tied into the bike carrier. This water is sacred and medicinal. GGS really appreciated that we brought it and kept it nicely for drinking . We kept a steel cup on top, and Srila Gour Govinda Swami, Bhagavata Prabhu, and I, used it frequently enough. The hotter it got, the faster the sides of that pot evaporated water from inside, making it colder as it got hotter out. It worked great! The water kept fresh and very cold! Hare Krsna

ARE GURUS DEMONS?

ARE GURUS DEMONS?ARE GURUS DEMONS? 1996/11/19 According to Srila Prabhupada the founder of ISKCON, the first principle of Krishna consciousness is to accept and worship a bona fide pure devotee guru [acharyopasana]. This eternal principle is not at all unlike the “first step” in Christianity: that we must “accept Jesus” as God’s pure represent-ative [i.e. as our guru] in order to proceed any further. Next, “we become what we worship.” Therefore Srila Prabhupada constantly warns, we must…See More

One prominent Vedic astrologer who did Tamal's chart, privately stated this

One prominent Vedic astrologer who did Tamal's chart, privately stated this:“Tamal’s chart is very clear as a low class, envious demoniac person who gets the best of all gurus, but who would use his guru for his own sense gratification, and illegally inherit his material assets. Intelligent people can ‘judge for themselves,’ although most devotees are very clear about what went on and who Tamal was, but there will still always be followers of rakshasas who just offend the pure devotee.
