What if your scientists had discovered means to keep you alive for centuries, via genetic modifications and use of cloned organs, and possibly could extend life even forever after that, if they can manage to transfer the self into the cloned bodies and/or computors; a goal they openly proclaim now is quite possible, and soon?
What if seven billion people could live for centuries. What if you thought that there were limited resources. What if you mistakenly but adhesively determined that a few could live glorious lives almost forever in abundance, whereas the seven billion might live long, but never with enough? And what if you thought it was your right to choose the future of mankind?
Look around; unlimited alternative energy is now here, life extension technologies abound but withheld from the public, super computors and melding of human brain to them is increasing, space travel is a regular occurance, everything required to build the transhumanist eugenicist world is pretty much ready to go.
