The Long Flight of the Canada Goose
Good bye my love!
I watched your dark webbed feet walk many a mile before me, foraging the sweet green grass.
You sat for days without eating, atop our eggs to hatch our flock, without question or complaint.
You would glady die than let strangers near the eggs. I have watched your raise your wings and your head high!
You stood by and shepherded our dear tiny chicks as the crows and vile beasts strove to take them for their meal.
You flew with me lo the many windy gusty miles, against cold and rain, against heat and storm, against other geese and wild men.
You would not stop, you pressed on with faith, you took me with you.
Your voice kept me always within range, we were never lost nor seperated long, we were together married for life.
Now as the years take their toll and the southern lands again call us against winter freeze, to the fresh grass...
Together we have seen towns and valleys, trains and planes, rivers and seas pass, beneath our skilled forms.
But Your wings no longer have the strength, and so you must descend into the fields, hide yourself in the reeds by the pool ! You shall not fly again.
My love my life, is it all done now? Have we reached our summer home? Will we raise our chicks again?
And I soon also shall look up upon the Lord of the Geese, and will myself to go to Him soon in my end.
The good God Who fed us the luscious grass, who warmed us with His sunshine, we pray will return us to His nest when our this long flight is done.
