Do you Lowlanders sometimes still wear wooden shoes? Gour Govinda Swami always wore wooden sandals on his feet. Come to think of it, I have never seen a picture of Krsna wearing shoes! He has His silver sandals, seen in the temples, the same are used sometimes to touch the heads of the devotees in blessing.
Once I knew of Srila Prabhupada's shoes, located near his straw hut, this during the Maha kumbha mela, in Prayaga near the Triveni, next to the train bridge, ISKCON camp, circa 1976. I gladly picked up his slip-on runners, and immediately placed them on my head ! Never mind, I shook out some dust and quickly ate some. Maha maha nectar. I wish I had some right now, I would share it with you.
Here in Winnipeg, we still occassionally wear mukluks or snowshoes.
