Seems that material pursuits are endless and meaningless other than gratifying a temporary illusory desire. Varnashrama dharma is therefore an engine that allows fulfillment of those passions by those on semi-animal and relativistic body-ego trips. The brahmanas should have realized the futility of material existence, and they thus float above the social structures of the material realms and contemplate instead the perfect and eternal worlds, which are always the same and yet always expanding and fresh to the living entities created by Krsna. That ever-fresh quality is not so apparent in matter, and so the soul, which is not matter but of another element, finds a a lack of meaning leading to a dead end, or even absurdity, in the whole material life. The impersonalists at that point seek annihilation, whereeas the devotees seek Yogamaya.
