'Ice Lady' kills, chops and buries husband, lover in cellar
A former ice cream parlor owner by the name of Estibaliz Carranze has confessed to the killings of her husband and lover and burying them in her ice cream cellar.
The Austrian national is being termed as the “ice lady” due to her being extremely cold-hearted and vengeful. The ice lady, Estibaliz Carranza, is a 34-year-old Mexican-Spanish woman who used to run an ice cream parlor in Vienna. She killed her ex-husband and her lover for “demeaning” her.
Estibaliz Carranza said during a court hearing that she killed her ex-husband because he yelled at her and made fun of her poor German, whereas she killed her lover for being unfaithful. In both the cases, Carranza explained that she killed her victims with a .22 caliber Beretta pistol. She then cut up the bodies of her victims into pieces and put them in a freezer at the parlor before burying them downstairs in the cellar. The bodies were discovered during maintenance work and the discovery led to the eventual discovery of this gruesome crime.
Carranza appeared before a packed room during her court hearing on Monday amid security guards and her famed defense lawyer, Rudolf Mayer. She was wearing a grey dress and looked quite somber and stoic.
The prosecutor for the case, Petra Freh, described the defendant as “ice-cold” and a “ticking time bomb.” The attorney also expressed the fear that Carranza might kill again.
In the court, Carranza clarified her situation under which she killed both her victims. She said that the nature of her husband had considerably changed after their wedding and that their relationship worsened after they were evicted from their apartment and moved to the ice cream parlor. Carranza said that her husband, Holger Holz, later joined Hare Krishna movement and he became even more difficult to be around with. She then divorced him, but he refused to move out.
Carranza then started a relationship with the ice cream machine salesman and things got worse between her and her ex-husband. A fight eventually broke out after which Carranza killed Holz, while he was working on his computer.
Carranza shot her lover when she suspected him of cheating on her. According to the court details, Carranza said that she killed her boyfriend while he was sleeping because she was so furious for cheating on her.

The owner of an ice cream parlour who murdered two men and hid their frozen bodies under her shop has been sentenced to life in a secure mental institution.
Estibaliz Carranza, dubbed the "ice lady" by media in her native Austria, shot dead her husband, Holger Holz, in 2008 as he sat at his computer.
Her new partner, Manfred Hinterberger, suffered the same fate two years later as he slept in bed.
The 34-year-old admitted shooting both men at close range in the back of the head before cutting up their bodies with a chainsaw, placing the body parts in a deep freeze and hiding them in concrete in the cellar of her store in Vienna.
Their remains were found by chance during maintenance work in 2011.
Judge Susanne Lehr told a court in Vienna that Carranza's confession and her state of "considerable psychological damage" were mitigating factors, but her careful planning and her behaviour after the murders counted against her.
Earlier, Carranza wept as she told the judge: "All I can say is that I'm sorry I took the lives of Holger and Manfred."
Carranza, a Mexican-Spanish immigrant, said Mr Holz had completely changed after their wedding, turning verbally abusive, lazy and joining a Hare Krishna sect.
She complained that he had refused to move out when she had a new lover, even after their divorce.

A woman described as “singularly cold-blooded” went on trial in Austria on Monday accused of murdering two men and setting their sawn-up body parts in concrete in the cellar of her ice cream parlour.
Dubbed the “trial of the year” in Austrian media, Goidsargi Estibaliz Carranza Zabala, who has joint Spanish-Mexican citizenship, is charged with shooting dead her husband in 2008 and in 2010 her new partner.
Prosecutors allege she then sliced up the bodies of her first victim Holger Holz and the second, Manfred Hinterberger, with a chain saw and concealed the pieces in lumps of concrete that she mixed in the cellar under her “Schleckeria” shop in Vienna.
The gruesome remains were discovered by chance during maintenance work in June 2011. After going on the run to Italy, Carranza was captured several days afterwards and later extradited.
When arrested, Carranza was two-months pregnant by another man, whom she married in prison in March this year. The baby was born in January but the boy was immediately taken away from her and is now reportedly being looked after by Carranza’s parents in Barcelona.
A psychiatric report commissioned by the court said that Carranza, now in a unit for the “mentally abnormal”, was dangerous and was like a “princess … who just wants to be ‘rescued’ by a man”.
“She intends to confess. She has already told the court-appointed expert everything that she did, as she also did when she was arrested by the Italian police,” Werner Tomanek, one of her defence lawyers, told AFP.
Carranza allegedly shot both victims at close range with a .22-calibre Beretta pistol, in Holz’s case as he worked on his computer and Hinterberger as he slept. Before the second killing she took shooting lessons as well as a course in mixing concrete at a local hardware store.
Immediately after disposing of Hinterberger, she booked an “urgent manicure appointment” in order to repair her damaged nails, according to the charge sheet.
“This woman has two faces,” prosecutor Petra Freh told the packed courtroom on Monday. “She will try to play here the part of someone well-behaved, who would never do something like this.
“My task is to show you her other side … That she is a singularly cold-blooded and unscrupulous killer,” Freh said. “Do not be fooled.”
Wearing a grey dress and glasses, Carranza showed no emotion as the accusations against her were read out.
The trial was scheduled to last several days, with around 50 witnesses and seven experts due to testify.

Carranza said that the character of her husband, Holger Holz, had totally changed after they wed, and that the situation got worse when they were evicted from their apartment and moved into the ice cream parlor. Holz she said, joined the Hare Krishna movement and slept ‘til 10 o’clock and came home late. There was no ice-cream on hand and he did nothing.
