Four of France's most famous editorial cartoonists, Charb, Cabu, Tignous and Wolinski, were among the 12 killed on Jan. 7, 2015 by two gunmen at the Charlie Hebdo offices in Paris. The satirical newspaper Charlie Hebdo had courted controversy in the past, surviving a petrol bombing in 2011 in response to a cartoon it ran depicting the prophet Muhammad.
