Keshava Swami on Attack of Brother, Sadhu dasa,
in Mayapur

BY: LILANANDA DASA (ACBSP)

Sep 18, 2013 — ALACHUA, FLORIDA (SUN) — Keshava Swami speaks out about recent attempt to murder his brother, Sadhu dasa, in Mayapur.

Dear devotees: All glories to Srila Prabhupada! Please accept my humble obeisances.

It is with great appreciation that I would like to express my deepest thanks to all Vaishnava devotees of ISKCON Sri Mayapur Chandrodaya Mandir and Kolkata Mandir, for their invaluable support at this most needed moment of my family.

Also to His Holiness Jayapataka Swami Maharaja for his personal concern and kind care for all living beings. My brother Sadhu Prabhu, my mother Madhavi Devi Dasi, my younger brother Akinchana das and myself, are all indebted to so many great souls who selflessly gave their precious time in a quick humanitarian response to this urgent situation. Words are not enough to express our thankfulness to all these dear devotees of Lord Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu.

I do not accuse anybody for this episode in the life of my brother. Everyone needs to live with their own consciousness. We are guilty of forgetting Krishna and for sure we should be receiving the results of our past and present karma. Certainly, such malicious conduct can never be excused with an intellectual or speculative philosophical interpretation. Bg 16. 7: "Those who are demoniac do not know what is to be done and what is not to be done. Neither cleanliness nor proper behavior nor truth is found in them."

Some people may think that this is a simple case of violence and possibly somebody else could afford such heavy and dangerous condition in his life. In order to make it more understandable, I will try to describe some details and the history behind it, and provide information necessary for the concerned friends.

During many years certain people have been taking a lot of money from Sadhu, cheating him with fake papers and signatures of properties' ownership and trying to become the owner of those properties. After carefully considering the situation, they arrived at the following decision: "If Sadhu dies, everything will belong to us". This is a common propensity found in the local people. It is also a propensity to threat to kill or, In Sadhu's case, practically killing him. After their mission is accomplished, they go to the local police, pay some money, and very soon they are found walking freely chanting on their beads. Actually, they can often justify such heinous behavior with very convincing explanations. This is common knowledge in Mayapur and there are many stories that could be shared. We pray to the Lord to finish this untruthful and dishonest practice and hope to see the Holy Dhama preserved, respected and safeguarded. It's my advice to the devotees to follow the instructions from Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu in relation to intimate relationship with the Dhamavasis and thus avoid futures difficulties. We should neither try to imitated nor associate closely with them. This will help both sides refrain from committing offenses.

On Thursday, September 5 at around 9 p.m., Sadhu Prabhu was brutally attacked by five gundas with sticks and knives in his own apartment. He was taken by surprise as they requested to see him with the excuse of delivering some papers from the Trust he is involved with the principal perpetrator, who called him for this purpose.

Immediately upon arrival they sprayed pepper gas in his eyes. Although he managed to protect his left eye, his right eye became disabled and he had to defend himself with partial vision. Next, the principal attempting killer, holding a serrated edge blade sharp knife, caught him by the testicles and tried to immobilize Sadhu, while at the same time trying to cut off his throat. While this was going on, the other assailants were beating him with sticks and punches. He defended himself protecting his throat with his hands and arms, while exposing those parts of his body to severe injuries. He kept defending himself in this way for three to four minutes, receiving during this time over 150 lesions in his arms, hands and throat. Protecting his jugular vein with his right thumb, he sacrificed it to save his life, as the thumb was almost entirely cut off at the distance of 3 mm from the throat. His right thumb was severely injured during the fight and the doctors had to amputate its first proximal phalanx.

Soon Sadhu realized that he was becoming debilitate and weak due to the severe bleeding and the very hard fight, and, to avoid a worse situation, simulated being dead by falling on the floor and making a big noise with his feet. The murderers immediately stopped the coward action thinking that the killing operation was accomplished. This gave Sadhu a little time to recuperate his strength and from the floor he watched them exiting. He was worried of them also attacking our 87-year old mother who was still asleep in the room next door. She was very lucky because she did not hear the noise caused by the commotion of the assault. When Sadhu recovered a little and regained some strength, he stood up, ran to the door screaming for help and started going down the stairs in search of assistance. The criminals came back and the fight continued in the corridor till he reached the third floor. Some of the perpetrators tried to stop him from going to the street, but Sadhu was determinate, roaring and fighting in a way that they became afraid and abandoned their wicked action. At the same time, the father-in-law and the brother-in-law, both accomplices of the principal assailant implicated in this criminal and abominable act, were stationed at the entrance door of the ground floor of the building blocking devotees from going upstairs to help Sadhu who desperately was fighting with the criminals.

As it is stated: "mare krishna rakhe ke, rakhe krishna mare ke", if Krishna protects someone, no one can kill him, and if Krishna wants to kill someone, no one can save him.

Please dear devotees, try to understand these very important points:

1. That we should not try to imitate the Dhamavasis, and we probably shouldn't associate with them to closely.

2. However, we definitely should not commit Vaishnava aparadha against them.

We want to see the holy dhama of Lord Krishna and Lord Caitanya protected and respected. With most of them, keep an externally respectful relationship, while maintaining distance. They see people from the West as rich and potential sources of income. There are three gates leading to hell: Lust, Anger and Greed. Bg 16.21

Sadhu made an Interesting observation. One week before the murder attempt, all family members involved in this crime started coming to the entire morning program assiduously. In several years, although living in the community and near the temple, they had not displayed such kind of devotional demeanor, not even once. Never trust too much devotion or friendship. Avoid eating food prepared by people who you don't know, even if they are very kind, friendly, and sympathetic. It's a long and ancient tradition of Tantric, Yantras and Mantras to infatuate people and bewitch them to obtain anything the criminal demands. Be careful dealing intimately with the local people and also employing them. And be cautious and attentive to avoid exposing your home and family members to thieves and robbers.

This is my personal perception of the history of this criminal incident. Externally it may appear as a simple homicide attempt. However, I am not so naïve to believe it. This is a black magic sacrificial ceremony and it has all connotations of this evil atrocious conduct. First they grab the victim by his genitals, like the sacrificial goat, and then cut off his throat with a special sword as an offering from a member of the criminal family. We noted that one of the nefarious delinquents was wearing a Brahmin thread. This means for sure he's chanting mantras for the sacrifice to the deity of Bhadrakali, very common in West Bengal. Now, my honest advice to anyone directly or indirectly involved in this black magic ritual: "be very, but very vigilant and circumspect and remember the offering of Jada-Bharata by the dacoits to the Goddess Kali. Similar to those circumstances, at this moment all of you need to suffer Kali's anger. So, think seriously about it."

And a final meditation from the last words of Srila Prabhupada while on this planet: "One should understand that no one is independent, for everything is part and parcel of Krsna and is acting and moving by the supreme desire of Krsna. This understanding, this consciousness, is Krsna consciousness." SB 10.13.53, purport.

The most humble servant of the servants of Srila Prabhupada,

Kesava Dasa Swami

PS: My greatest heartfelt and thankful appreciation to all the devotees around the world who are praying for Sadhu and our family. Although it is not possible for me to name everyone, I would like to offer these few great souls my deepest affection: Ajamila Prabhu, Hansarupa Prabhu, Arjuna Prana Prabhu, Venu Gopal Prabhu, and Dinah Dayal Prabhu. Due to your immediate and quick response you saved the life of my brother.
