Mayor Bloomberg ignited a contest Monday to stimulate development of extremely small apartments called micro units. They are intended to be used by young singles willing to place themselves into such uncomfortable living arrangements.

The new closet-like flats will range from just 275 to 300 square feet (photo above shows Bloomberg on a floor model of a micro unit). They are larger than a jail cell, but smaller than a mobile home, and they'll have special permission to ignore city rules requiring newly built apartments to exceed 400 square feet, according to the Daily News.

Bloomberg said:

“The city’s demographics have changed, it used to be the average household was a family, a couple of adults and some children.”

That meant that the city was filled with larger dwellings, leaving just one million studios and one bedrooms, which is not nearly enough for the 1.8 million one and two-person households.

At a news conference Monday, the mayor announced a contest seeking a developer for about 80 micro units at a city-owned parking lot on E. 27th St. in Kips Bay.

The mini-studios will be just big enough for a bathroom, kitchen and sleeping and dining areas.

Real estate experts said young college grads would snap up the apartments, but that depends on the price. City officials said they would be less than $2,000 a month.

Jared Guy Rudolph of the CORE Group says:

“There definitely will be a demand for it."

If you’re looking to move into one of the micro units, Janel Laban, executive editor of apartmenttherapy.com, recommends lots of lighting and freeing up floor space with hanging shelves.

s He Serious? Bloomberg Bans Food Donations To The Homeless (VIDEO)

Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s food police have struck again!

STORY: Seriously!? Bloomberg Wants To Start Development Of Jail Cell-Like Apartments!

Bloomberg is facing criticism after it was revealed that he's halted food donations to homeless shelters because the city can’t assess their salt, fat and fiber content.

As reported by CBS News:

Glenn Richter arrived at a West Side synagogue on Monday to collect surplus bagels — fresh nutritious bagels — to donate to the poor. However, under a new edict from Bloomberg’s food police he can no longer donate the food to city homeless shelters. It’s the “no bagels for you” edict.

Richter has been collecting food from places like the Ohav Zedek synagogue and bringing it to homeless shelters for more than 20 years, but recently his donation, including a “cholent” or carrot stew, was turned away because the Bloomberg administration wants to monitor the salt, fat and fiber eaten by the homeless.

Richter said he was stunned. He said his family has eaten the same food forever and flourished.

Comment #1:  Thank goodness I am a share holder with the Soylent Corporation. Plenty if food for all of us with our new “Green” technology!

Comment #2:  It’s only a matter of time before mother nature knocks us down a notch. Or another World War. Or a world war because of a super virus.

Comment #3:  When I was a young lad I remember them telling us in school that the earth wasn’t capable of supporting a population of more than 3 billion. With technology we have adjusted that number but at some point, like a deer herd or a warren of rabbits, wouldn’t it make sense that (since we can’t do it ourselves) at some point mother nature will adjust the population for us?
