... one verse comes to mind,

Performing Bhakti Yoga to Krishna in the prescribed manner induces within a very short time
a) detachment from worldly things and worldly minded people.
b) bestows supreme knowledge which is beyond logical reasoning.
So the formula is, be attached to Krishna and our lower taste of being attached to things and people of the world will automatically fall by the side. And the other benefit of being attached to Krishna is automatically spiritual knowledge of Who am I and Who is God and our connection to Him is revealed because Krishna makes a pure devotee available to us who brings us closer to Him.
But one who thinks himself to be the 'doer', tries to think, 'this world is an illusion and so I must try to get detached', will find it difficult to control his senses, because the pull of Maya is so strong that he will be pulled back to the same things he is trying to resist. That which we resist, persists.
This fact is from my own experience. For a long time I would want to leave smoking but would fall back again when in company of 'friends' addicted to smoking. But when I was introduced to this Krishna Consciousness philosophy and I started following the principles of Bhakti Yogah - japa and kirtana, listening to lectures, and reading Prabhupada's books such as Gita and Bhagavatam, then without even trying to, my smoking habit was left behind. And through the process of eating Krishna Prasad, my lower nature of enjoying non-vegetarian food left me. I did not have to make any extra effort. The path is so simple that seeing the change in my nature, my family started following me to doing japa, bhajans, kirtans and hearing discourses. And by the Krishna's Grace and Mercy they left non-vegetarian food.
First, I used to worship all the demigods. On Mondays I used to visit Shiva Temple, on Tuesdays - Ganesha Temple, on Wednesdays - Novino (lighting candle) at Mahim Church, Thursdays - Saibaba Temple, Fridays - Santoshi Maa Temple and Saturdays - Hanuman Temple, and on Sundays I used to go to visit Krishna. But now by Krishna's Mercy, I have one God - Krishna, one book - Gita, one philosophy - Krishna Consciousness
This is the magic of Krishna when we associate with His pure devotee. Now, my extended family like my sister-in-law and her friends are becoming Krishna Conscious.
So that's it. The mind, when surrendered at the lotus feet of Krishna, subdues the senses. Hence it is said, that one whose intelligence is divinely guided, whose mind is reined by surrender to Krishna, then his senses automatically come under his control, he slowly becomes self-controlled or sthitapragnya, such a person gets peace, perfection and the supreme destination.
And any of the 9 processes of Bhakti spoken by Prahlada can take us across the ocean of misery - Hearing, Chanting, Remembering, worshiping at the feet of His pure devotee, reciting Prayers, offering obeisance, Serving with humility, being a friend to Him, complete surrender at His lotus feet, can purify us. But the most powerful is Hearing about His name form and pastimes. The rest of the processes will come to us effortlessly.
