The Phenomena of Reverse Speech
Much of this chapter is taken from a paper I had written for my Reverse Speech training class. David Oates liked it and has posted it on his web site under the "Student Papers" section. It provides an introduction to the phenomena, but it is not exhaustive. The reader is encouraged to expand his or her understanding of Reverse Speech by visiting the Reverse Speech web site and by practicing locating their own speech reversals using the wave editing software included on this CD.
The Discovery and History of Reverse Speech
The discovery of Reverse Speech, like so many important discoveries in this world, came as an accident, or perhaps we should say, serendipity. Its discovery came about as a result of an intentional act, a marketing ploy by entertainers who led a generation with their creative endeavors—the Beatles. Perhaps as a means to turn around their failing popularity as a result of a serious faux pax, saying that they were more popular than Christ, the Beatles intentionally dubbed a soundtrack in reverse onto one of their recordings. The idea was to challenge fans to see if they could find hidden verbal messages. It worked. All over the world people were buying Beatles albums and recordings of other performers and manually rotating their turntables backwards to see if they could hear the messages. The surprise however, was that along with the messages that were intentionally placed in reverse, other messages, references to Satan, were also found—messages which seemed to confirm what some had believed all along—rock and roll music was inspired by the devil! Messages intentionally recorded in reverse came to be known as "backward masking" and when the recording was played in reverse they were as intelligible and clear as any forward recording was. When the record was played in regular forward mode the backward masking was usually "buried" among the guitar riffs so as to be "masked," and not meant to be heard well. These messages varied among performers from straightforward communications to cryptic and mysterious messages which may have had no factual meaning.
The search for backward masked messages led to the surprise findings of other intelligible sounds, and many references to Satan. The morality of people in the ‘70’s was still such that this was shocking to many people (Good thing it wasn’t discovered in the ‘90’s—it might just have been written off as "normal"). Such findings led to the thorough examination of hundreds of rock music recordings in reverse, and the findings of many references to Satan and hell. Parents became concerned that their children were being unwittingly subjected to satanic programming, ministers railed against the decadence of rock and roll music, and legislation was even introduced in California to require record publishers to warn listeners of any records which intentionally had backward sounds recorded.
One Person Listened Further
While the sensation of backward masking and satanic messages was tormenting the more righteous among us, no one it seems had the curiosity of looking at the phenomena further—except for one inspired individual in Australia, David John Oates, a former insurance broker. Working at the time as a youth counselor, those in his charge had come to him with the shocking news. David, in an effort to dispel the idea, rigged a tape player to play in reverse, and found out that it was indeed true—intelligible messages were found when recording were played in reverse. He also had the initiative to see if the phenomena was limited to music, or if such messages were also present in other forms of communication. He began to play all types of recordings backwards—speeches, conversation, arguments, infants cooing and babbling—and made what will surely come to be known as one of the most significant discoveries of all time: all human verbal communication has not just a public face, the one meant to be shown, but it also has a hidden side, one that is covert but which communicates nonetheless, additional information which is just as, or perhaps even more important than, the sounds which we consciously hear.
David became very involved in the study of speech reversals and eventually labeled this form of communication "Reverse Speech," a very descriptive moniker. His study became very thorough. He documented a variety of forms and structures of reversals and categorized them, and connected the voices of the reversals with the understanding of the subconscious and collective unconscious as put forward by Carl Jung. The study became quite deep and detailed, and gradually evolved to a general theory of verbal human communication. The theory, developed over a decade of research, contributes immensely to our understanding of the communication process, and brings to humanity a new and bright horizon in communication to see and explore.
The Theory of Reverse Speech and Speech Complimentarity
Oates’ called his general theory of verbal human communication The Theory of Reverse Speech and Speech Complimentarity and it addresses the significant features of Reverse Speech. It states that 1) Human speech has two distinctive and complementary functions and modes, and 2) these two modes of speech are dependent upon each other.
The Overt, or Conscious, Mode is spoken forwards and is constructed by conscious cognitive processes. The Covert, or Unconscious, Mode, spoken simultaneously with the Overt Mode, is a reversal of forward speech sounds constructed by subconscious processes. Together they form an integral part of communication, and both modes of speech together communicate the total psyche of a person—conscious as well as unconscious.
But How Does It Happen?
How does Reverse Speech happen? How does the human mind construct cognitive, meaningful communication in reverse while speech goes on forward? Oates’ research has shown that speech reversals occur with greater frequency when the speaker is more emotionally charged. Formal speeches have very few reversals, perhaps one every two to three minutes. As a person speaks in a more informal and relaxed environment the reversals increase in number. And when a person is highly emotionally aroused the reversals will occur with a frequency of every 2-3 seconds. These findings show that emotions play an important role in Reverse Speech. Emotions have been shown to be a function of the right hemisphere of the brain. Hence, Reverse Speech Theory suggests that while the left side of the brain generates the overt, forward speech, it is the right side of the brain which contributes the covert, reverse speech. The right side of the brain then must work in conjunction with the left side of the brain so that the words chosen in overt communication will create sounds which form the intelligible sounds of the covert communication. An amazing feat! This can account for a speaker’s pauses, stammerings, and fumbling over the choice of words as he speaks. The words are we choose to express our conscious mind are in part selected by the unconscious mind to communicate our unconscious thoughts.
The Many Parts of Reverse Speech
Reverse Speech is as universal a language as forward speech—everyone speaks it, and we all hear it. However, Reverse Speech differs in many ways from normal forward speech. Thousands of hours of studying many tens of thousands of speech reversals by Oates has revealed significant variety in:

He is aware that Tamal is not listening to him however. Tamal Krishna: [How]? I don't see that you're diminishing in your strength.

Prabhupada: [In that also, I am diminished.]
Tamal Krishna: That's a fact. Now when you try and sit up, you always fall over to the side.
Prabhupada: So in case... ["In case," no]. From the fact I can see that I have no appetite. [Then how I can increase] strength?
Tamal Krishna: Well, I can only repeat the words of the Kaviraj.
Prabhupada: No, that is not...
Tamal Krishna: He states that you can't expect to eat as long as the liver and the kidneys are not functioning properly.
Prabhupada: So that is not functioning.
Tamal Krishna: Well, he says that he can get it to function properly.
Prabhupada: [He says], but I practically see.
Tamal Krishna: But his medicine cannot... He also says that his medicine [cannot be judged] over a period of five or six days.

The arguments presented here by Prabhupada are so complete and thorough that this could well be a conversation in forward speech. He has attempted to gain Tamal's cooperation through every conceivable angle. Tamal cautions himself and flatly refuses to comply. Can anyone say these are coincidental sounds? Impossible. This conversation is completely consistent with and relevant to the drama that is being played out at the time.

EVERY voice found on the tapes of Prabhupada's last days confirm this heinous activity. In this study both Tamal Krishna and Bhakti Caru can be heard to confess, via speech reversals, to poisoning Srila Prabhupada, and others are implicated as well. Please rest assured that this is not simply something that I have made up.
I have no vendetta against ISKCON, nor any of its leaders. I have never been an open critic of ISKCON. I am simply attempting to get to the truth of this unfortunate matter since the consequences of it are extremely important for the future of all devotees, for ISKCON, and for all the world. It has been a devastating experience to go through this and I know that it will likewise be very painful for any and every one to come to grips with the truth of this matter. Nonetheless, however painful we MUST learn the truth and take appropriate action for the future of Srila Prabhupada's mission.
As of late we are seeing written testimonials from various quarters as to how the "loving followers" surrounding Srila Prabhupada at the time couldn't possibly have done such a thing. Sorry to sound callous, but these sentiments have nothing to do with the facts of the matter. If these parties are innocent as claimed, let them confess their innocence by their recorded words. Let's have a recorded interview that could be analyzed by Reverse Speech Analysis, and/or the Truster truth/lie detector software. In my last post I gave an introduction to the amazing phenomena of Reverse Speech©, whereby we hear two voices from the same spoken word. The voice of our conscious, forward speech is complimented by the voice of our unconscious mind, speaking in reverse. Sometimes called "the voice of the soul," speech reversals are the unerring voice of truth. Over and over again, investigators into this phenomena have confirmed that Reverse Speech does indeed open a window into that most guarded of secret places: the mind. This profound discovery has been a useful tool in many investigations, and now it has been used to bring further evidence that Srila Prabhupada was indeed poisoned.
I do not bring these charges lightly. In fact, I do not make any charges at all. It is the more than 400 speech reversals found on the tapes of Srila Prabhupada's last days* with us that bring the evidence directly from the mouths of the perpetrators themselves. These hundreds of speech reversals are mutually supportive in their declaration of conspiratorial activity, and can be heard in the words of every person speaking on these tapes: Srila Prabhupada, Tamal Krishna, Bhakti Caru, the Kaviraj, Satadhanya, Lokanatha Swami, Brahmananda (Swami), as well as others. It is all of these people, who were on the scene at the time, who tell of activity of poisoning. They make the charges. More than two also confess to the crime and their conspiratorial activity. They also tell of their guilt, their shame, and their arrogance. Some tell of their anger, or their despair. Srila Prabhupada tells, as well, of his complete surrender to the Lord. Together they portray a very compelling picture, all in the voice of their soul.
It is, without a doubt, very disturbing and disheartening to hear what is spoken. Nonetheless the truth must be told and that is my purpose in bringing this story to you. I do so with all humility. I am simply for the truth, and having found the truth I must report it, to borrow a phrase, as it is. Not the way I want it to be, or hoped it would be, or would like it to be. The truth is not always pleasant or even palatable, but it nonetheless it needs to be spoken. This is Srila Prabhupada's instruction to us from his Bhagavad-gita:
"Nothing should be accepted blindly; everything should be accepted with care and with caution. Satyam, truthfulness, means that facts should be presented as they are, for the benefit of others. Facts should not be misrepresented. According to social conventions, it is said that one can speak the truth only when it is palatable others. But that is not truthfulness. The truth should be spoken in a straightforward way, so that others will understand actually what the facts are. If a man is a thief and if people are warned that he is a thief, that is truth. Although sometimes the truth is unpalatable, one should not refrain from speaking it. Truthfulness demands that the facts be presented as they are for the benefit of others. That is the definition of truth." Purport Bg. 10.4-5
On the authority of these instructions I present herewith, as an introduction, a small sampling of the more than 400 speech reversals that tell the truth of what was going on during October-November 1977.
We will begin with a sampling of Srila Prabhupada's speech reversals. The speech reversals are hyper-linked to play when you click on them. For clarity's sake each speech reversal is played twice at a slower speed, and twice at normal speed, and then followed by the exact forward speech where the speech reversal occurred. My comments and explanations follow the speech reversals and are indented and in italics.
Srila Prabhupada: Save Me (Found on tape T38)
Forward in brackets: no, no, [in case] it is not successful.
Isa Prabhu published on VNN a segment of a tape in which Tamal Krishna states to Satsvarupa Maharaja that Srila Prabhupada had on several occasions requested something to "make me disappear." The speech reversals of Srila Prabhupada during the last weeks of his life repeatedly refute the idea that Srila Prabhupada wanted to leave this world. My study offers at least 7 different speech reversals wherein Srila Prabhupada asks to be saved, such as this one, with absolutely none being found which indicate otherwise. Prabhupada wanted only to continue with his mission of spreading Krishna Consciousness around the world. However much he may have appealed for his welfare, either in forward or Reverse Speech, his appeals were denied and the poisoning business continued until he finally decided to leave this world.
Srila Prabhupada: We feed on death (Found on tape T46)

In this speech reversal Srila Prabhupada reveals that he is literally feeding on death. Many speech reversals indicate that both Prabhupada's food and medications were poisoned.
Srila Prabhupada: The worst was just you kill. (Found on tape T45)

Was the poison simply an accidental overdose of bad medicine? Speech reversals such as this confirm that it was an intentional act to deliberately send Srila Prabhupada to an early grave. The perpetrators confessions will be heard below, and Srila Prabhupada confirms the same in this speech reversal.
Srila Prabhupada: We shouldn't be killed. (Found on tape T45)
Forward in brackets: "Bring [little medicine] or no medicine."
Srila Prabhupada again confirms that they are deliberately attempting to kill him by this protest in Reverse Speech.
Srila Prabhupada: Aye Govinda, / Lord I'll follow (Note these are 2 separate speech reversals here. Found on tape T45)

This example offers us some insight into Srila Prabhupada's course of action. Devotees such as Trivikrama Swami have offered that Srila Prabhupada would simply have had to say just a word to him and he would have done the needful to protect him or remove him to a safe place. This is offered as proof that Srila Prabhupada was not therefore being poisoned. However, this speech reversal immediately humbles us and denies our speculations, as it states unequivocally that Srila Prabhupada was following the direction of the Lord in his actions. How are we to know what Srila Prabhupada would have, or could have done? What we learn from this speech reversal is that although we may not understand his actions or speech, he was cent per cent a surrendered soul who unhesitatingly followed the Lord's direction, regardless of the apparent personal cost to himself.
Indeed, atheists raise the same question regarding the crucifixion of Lord Jesus. They say that if he was powerful enough to walk on water and perform other such miracles then surely he could have saved himself from the sufferings he endured at the hands of the Romans. That he didn't thus PROVES that the reports of miracles, or his intimate connection with the Lord was bogus. However, the Lord gives direction that the pure devotees follow, even though we may not be able to understand or reconcile their behavior with our poor fund of knowledge or material calculations.
There were a great many speech reversals found on Tamal Krishna, as he is one of the main speakers on these tapes, and many for Bhakti Caru as well, and for both of them their speech reversals reveal confessions, motives, arrogance, shame, mixed emotions and guilt. We offer just a sampling of these here but scores of others tell it all.
The ultimate expression of guilt is a direct confession, and the speech reversals of both Tamal Krishna and Bhakti Caru offer several confessions:
Tamal Krishna: I kill you now (Found on tape T36)
Forward in brackets: "So he's... He feels a little confident [under your care]"
Bhakti Caru: I kill the prophet. (Found on tape T45)
Forward in brackets: "he says that ah, it is [quite possible that ah], that mercury"
What can be said about these statements? They reveal the sad and shocking truth.
Tamal Krishna: God does know we did it (Found on tape T37)
Forward: "that you want to die"
In this speech reversal Tamal offers that God knows that WE (himself and OTHERS) did it. Did what? This speech reversal, appearing on the forward speech "that you want to die" indicates that Prabhupada's dying is caused by Tamal and others , and that God surely knows the fact.
Tamal Krishna: Fail upon arsenic (Found on tape T37)
Forward in brackets: "we'll just keep it quiet here [and turn off the light. Would you] prefer that?"
A Mr. David R. Hooper has written an article to refute the idea that Srila Prabhupada was not given arsenic. However they may argue the case back and forth, this and other speech reversals present the unequivocal truth of the matter. "Fail upon arsenic" refers to Srila Prabhupada's health failing from arsenic. It may be denied forever, but Reverse Speech confirms that arsenic, mercury, and other poisons, were given to Srila Prabhupada.
Tamal Krishna: Sin off us if this shit hid (Found on tape T38)
Forward in brackets: "So that is the basis for moving you, [that there should be some positive] strength shown."
This speech reversal reflects Tamal's mindset that IF the poisoning business is not found out then there will be no reaction. Indeed, by remaining undiscovered for the past twenty years there has been no reaction. But the truth is hid no longer and the reaction will soon surely follow! Taken together with his other speech reversals, such as the one below, the plot to remove the founder and usurp his mission unfolds.
Tamal Krishna: They'll follow when we get through with it. (Found on tape T47)
Forward in brackets: ["that if we were to take you in a bullock cart."]
Why bother to poison an elderly man whose natural death was simply a matter of a few short years? This speech reversal gives a partial answer to the question, and other motives are given in other speech reversals. This speech reversal reveals Tamal's intention to take control of the movement. He states here that they -the society of devotees- will follow him, when they get through with- what? Getting Srila Prabhupada out of the way. Follow him where? History shows us the path that was led has resulted in so many thousands of devotees giving up and leaving their spiritual master's mission out of disappointment and frustration.
Bhakti Caru: I been really corrupt. (Found on tape T37)
Forward: Hindi
Bhakti Caru recently posted a statement on the Internet in which he accepts full responsibility for whatever happened to Srila Prabhupada, since it was he who gave Prabhupada all of his food and medications. We receive his "confession" heartily with the hope that he will give a more complete confession revealing all of the details and players involved. His brash statement was not serious, but his confession via Reverse Speech tells the truth in no uncertain terms. Perhaps the revelation of his speech reversals will help him find the humility to be fully and completely truthful in this terrible matter. We pray for their sake and that of all others, that Bhakti Caru and the other conspirators will seek repentance before this life is over.
Someone else speaks one syllable while the reversed word "really" is being said, but listening closely one can distinguish the word.
Bhakti Caru: Heavy metal that milk (Found on tape T45)
[Hindi]
This speech reversal indicates that heavy metal was put into Srila Prabhupada's milk. Whether it was arsenic, mercury, or something else, it is widely known that heavy metals are extremely poisonous. Other speech reversals of Bhakti Caru indicate that poisonous substances were also put into Srila Prabhupada's medications. This accounts for Srila Prabhupada's natural inclination to stop taking the medications - he could tell from the physical reaction that they were not helping, but harming him.
Kaviraj: He create a sick pa. (Found on tape T37)
Forward: Hindi
Reverse Speech practitioners have often found speech reversals in languages other than the forward speech. The Kaviraj spoke very little English (only a word or two is heard here and there in all of his dialogue), nonetheless, his speech reversals in English are quite clear. Besides this one, which confirms that Srila Prabhupada's sickness was "created" by the poisons, his speech reversals show him to have been threatened, bribed and otherwise compromised during these last days. Perhaps this is why he was so morose and disconsolate.
Kaviraj: They've made your dying problem. (Found on tape T37)
Forward: Hindi
Again the Kaviraj confirms that Srila Prabhupada's health problems were not from natural causes, but were "made."
Unknown person: Hail of arsenic. (Found on tape T45)
Forward: "was some ris[k in traveling."]
This unknown person confirms that arsenic was indeed a part of the scene. Together with the many other speech reversals about arsenic, mercury and poison in general, it is sure and certain that poison was deliberately given to Srila Prabhupada to bring him to death's door.
This sampling of speech reversals tells us that Srila Prabhupada was the victim of poisoning, and that this activity was perpetrated by Tamal Krishna, Bhakti Caru and others. The other 400 or so speech reversals not only repeatedly support and confirm this conclusion, but allow for no other conclusion.
These speech reversals should not be taken to be random phenomena that will occur in any speech. If the reader has taken my earlier suggestion to investigate the Reverse Speech phenomena they will thoroughly understand that by now. Speech reversals have everything to do with the emotions, consciousness and conscious mind of the speaker and they reveal as much. Sadaputa Prabhu, a very respected devotee and Director of the Bhaktivedanta Institute, is familiar with Reverse Speech, which he investigated when researching material for his other books. He has reviewed this work, and his opinion is: "your results are consistent with my experience of Reverse Speech."
From each person speech reversals are found which indicate their relationship to each other as well as their "roles" in this drama. Srila Prabhupada is the victim, Tamal and Bhakti Caru the perpetrators, Satadhanya the helper and go-for, the Kaviraj an unwitting, and then reluctant player, and so on. As well as individual speech reversals, we have found fascinating conversations in Reverse Speech wherein Lokanath Swami curses Tamal for deliberately poisoning Prabhupada while Tamal Krishna brags of Lokanatha Swami of his intentions; in another conversation Srila Prabhupada uses numerous methods of persuasion to convince Tamal Krishna to stop the poisoning, while in reply Tamal tells him that he cannot be saved; and much more. The speech reversals of each character are consistent and mutually supporting, and present us with a very compelling story.
Anyone who has any interest at all in this unfortunate drama and its implications for the future of the society should listen this evidence directly from the participant's mouths. Consider it carefully, and then take action based upon those conclusions. Every one of you who reads this is a stakeholder in the future of the Movement, and therefore the future of the world. This is not a trivial matter; therefore no one should sit idle with this information. The body of solid evidence that this most heinous crime has taken place continues to grow. We cannot therefore continue with business as usual. This information demands action, for the sake of Srila Prabhupada's mission, and the sake of all future generations of the world. My appeal is that you contact all of the GBC and let them know what you think, and let them know how you think they, as trustees of Srila Prabhupada's mission, should deal with this tragedy.
No doubt there will be denials and disclaimers regarding this study and Reverse Speech in general. However, further truth on this matter can easily be obtained in the same manner that this study was done. Tamal Krishna, Bhakti Caru and Bhavananda have all offered written statements denying any and all poisoning activity. But we are not interested in anything they write, they can write anything at all - we want their spoken word. Let those who proclaim innocence come forward to be interviewed and speak of their innocence for recording. We will analyze their words using the Truster Lie Detector software and Reverse Speech. The truth of their activity will be revealed in their speech reversals even today! The truth can no longer be hidden.
We should be very surprised to see them volunteer for this however, and do not expect such cooperation from them for the sake of unity in Srila Prabhupada's movement. They had, and continue to have, their own agenda, which is not served by giving interviews on these matters. If they will not come forward to make such statements then perhaps some enterprising devotee will tape their lectures, particularly on the coming remembrance of Srila Prabhupada's passing next month, and forward those tapes to me for Reverse Speech analysis.
Detestable though it may be, the circumstances surrounding Srila Prabhupada's passing are extremely important to the future of his society and therefore the entire world. The complete truth of this matter must be brought to light.
