This past week heralded the selection of a Pope. The internet is abuzz with the idea his chosen name "Francis" refers to St. Francis of Assisi, whose father was named "Peter." However, Jorge Mario Bergoglio being the first Jesuit Pope, he more likely picked his name in honor of St. Francis Xavier, co-founder of the Society of Jesus - the Jesuits. What's particularly fascinating to me is this papal selection continues the stunning accuracy St. Malachy's prophecy concerning future Popes. The last-named Pope in Malachy's list, in addition to being called "Petrus Romanus" (Peter the Roman), is also designated the Black Pope. Of course many who follow Malachy's prophecy assumed the princes of the church would select a black cardinal. Instead they even more accurately fulfilled Malachy's prophecy by selecting the first Jesuit. It is tradition to refer to the Superior General of the Society of Jesus as the "Black Pope." Unsurprisingly, the Vatican public relations department is already hard at work fending off attacks against Pope Francis' good name. They vociferously reject accusations emerging from Argentina that he participated in an unwholesome way in the Argentine "Dirty War" during the 1970's. ​“There has never been a credible accusation against him,” said the Rev.
