Sliworsky’s were ethnic Ukrainians living in the country of Galacia under the rule of the Austrian Empire. There was no country called the Ukraine yet/then. (At the time they left for Canada (1901) Galacia was “occupied” “under the rule” of the Austria Empire.) During these periods the term Ukrainian (ethnic) was already well established.
The country Ukraine is very new….it swallowed up what was once Galicia around 1973. Ukraine has many ethnic Ukrainians, like the Sliworskys. You could now call the ethnic Ukrainians, if they lived in the Ukraine now,  “Ukrainian Ukrainians”.

Now……Going way back in time …..(note the word “Rus” has nothing to do with the Russians)

Identification.Ukrainian nationhood begins with the Kyivan Rus. This Eastern Slavic state flourished from the ninth to the thirteenth centuries within the territory of contemporary Ukraine, with Kyiv as its capital. The name Ukraine first appeared in twelfth century chronicles in reference to the Kyivan Rus. In medieval Europe cultural boundary codes were based on a native ground demarcation. Ukraine, with its lexical rootskraj(country) andkrayaty(to cut, and hence to demarcate), meant "[our] circumscribed land." The ethnonymRus was the main self-identification in Ukraine until the seventeenth century when the term Ukraine reappeared in documents. This ethnonym of Rus people,Rusych(plural,Rusychi), evolved intoRusyn, a western Ukrainian self-identification interchangeable with Ukrainian into the twentieth century.Ruthenian, a Latinization ofRusyn, was used by the Vatican and the Austrian Empire designating Ukrainians.
………………

In various documents our Grandfather was called an Austrian, Ruthenian, Polish, Galician…but mostly Ukrainian. Often the person taking down the info wrote down what he thought was right. Many documents have many mistakes…..take my word for it. Eg. Sliworsky has been spelled a zillion ways. In one Canadian censes it show his language as Russian. …it goes on and on…
He could of called himself an “Eastern Slav” or “Kyvian Rus” or “Rusyn” note again…nothing to do with Russians whose roots are very different)

I hope this helps…..and this is the simplfied version!

"Ukraine" war is largely an illusion
In case nobody noticed, Ukraine did not exist before 1932, and the peoples of that whole region have been fighting each other like A-rabs for millenia. What is now Ukraine was once Khazaria, Rusya, Red Rus, Ruthenia, Galicia, Hungary, Poland, Austria, Germany etc. going back forever. Starting WW$ over this has nothing to do with the Ukraine, and everything to do nowadays with globalist Luciferian and Jewish criminals versus traditional white Slavic Vedic, and now Orthodox Christian, values.
