Warnings to Gurus and Disciples by
Srila PrabhupadaBY: VAISNAVA DASA
Aug 04, 2013 — USA (SUN) — The recent fall of yet another guru, Mahanidhi Swami is very sad news. If one scrutinizingly studies text five of the Nectar of Instruction they will see the crystal clear warnings of the Sampradaya Acarya. For reference, the last two paragraphs of His purport are quoted below. If the GBC would have studied these instructions of His Divine Grace's before they rushed into the Zonal Acarya System back in 1978 so much chaos could have been avoided. But material desire infected the GBC, who ignored these warnings. They instantly put themselves on the level of uttama-adhikaris, and we know the history of what happened. To this day the chaos continues and now another guru has fallen and caused himself and his follower's problems, confusion and heartbreak.
In the following purport Srila Prabhupada clearly says:
"However, one should not imitate the behavior of an advanced devotee or maha-bhagavata without being self-realized, for by such imitation one will eventually become degraded."
As long as the present gurus imitate the maha-bhagavata they are putting their own spiritual lives in danger. They are setting themselves up for future degradation. The disciple naturally wants to think of his guru as being on the topmost platform, and for one who is not fully self-realized the praise and worship of their disciples becomes an intoxicant which means: "one will eventually become degraded."
Present gurus, disciples, readers, don't be surprised -- Mahanidhi's recent fall will more than likely not be the last! How many gurus have become infected and fallen so far? Whomever is propping themselves up on an artificial level and accepting worship, i.e., imitating the behavior of the maha-bhagavata is subject to the Sampradaya Acarya's warning.
Also within these two paragraphs all devotees are warned to be intelligent enough to distinguish between the different levels of devotees. Present gurus, please understand the actual level you are on, don't fool yourself. Disciples, don't be foolish, sentimental, blind followers anymore. If your guru says he is on the uttama platform, use your God given intelligence to understand the actual platform that he is on. As far as we know there is no one on the level of a perfect devotee in our society at the present moment. Yes, some devotees are very fixed up, very staunch and qualified, but most likely not maha-bhagavatas. Where is that perfect devotee, completely self-realized, exhibiting ecstatic symptoms of love of God within themselves as Srila Prabhupada did? Only those who exhibit these symptoms are maha-bhagavatas. So here in His purport Srila Prabhupada is saying to the present gurus: "Don't fool yourself!" "Know your own level of advancement!" "Don't imitate the uttama adhikari!"
"Otherwise eventually you will become degraded" It doesn't matter how long you have been steady, staunch and fixed, Srila Prabhupada's warning is there for one and all.
Srila Prabhupada also makes a very clear statement here in His Bhaktivedanta Purport that although the kanistha or madhyama-adhikaris can accept disciples, they shouldn't. (We can clearly see why.) This is made clear by His using the word "Therefore" in the concluding sentence of this most important purport. His definition of this word was given in a lecture on Srimad Bhagavatam 1.2.22 in Los Angeles on August 25, 1972.
"So "therefore." The word is "therefore." "Therefore" means after concluding something, then we say "therefore." When we talk, when we argue, when we come to the conclusion, then we say "therefore." Or when our argument is strong, then we say "therefore." So this "therefore" means that one is firmly convinced."
Nectar of Instruction, Text 5:
"When a person realizes himself to be an eternal servitor of Krishna, he loses interest in everything but Krishna's service. Always thinking of Krishna, devising means by which to spread the holy name of Krishna, he understands that his only business is in spreading the Krishna consciousness movement all over the world. Such a person is to be recognized as an uttama-adhikari, and his association should be immediately accepted according to the six processes (dadati pratigrihnati, etc.). Indeed, the advanced uttama-adhikari Vaishnava devotee should be accepted as a spiritual master. Everything one possesses should be offered to him, for it is enjoined that one should deliver whatever he has to the spiritual master. The brahmacari in particular is supposed to beg alms from others and offer them to the spiritual master. However, one should not imitate the behavior of an advanced devotee or maha-bhagavata without being self-realized, for by such imitation one will eventually become degraded.
In this verse Srila Rupa Gosvami advises the devotee to be intelligent enough to distinguish between the kanishtha-adhikari, madhyama-adhikari and uttama-adhikari. The devotee should also know his own position and should not try to imitate a devotee situated on a higher platform. Srila Bhaktivinoda Thakura has given some practical hints to the effect that an uttama-adhikari Vaishnava can be recognized by his ability to convert many fallen souls to Vaishnavism. One should not become a spiritual master unless he has attained the platform of uttama-adhikari. A neophyte Vaishnava or a Vaishnava situated on the intermediate platform can also accept disciples, but such disciples must be on the same platform, and it should be understood that they cannot advance very well toward the ultimate goal of life under his insufficient guidance. Therefore a disciple should be careful to accept an uttama-adhikari as a spiritual master."

GBC Letter on Mahanidhi Swami
BY: SUN STAFF
Aug 03, 2013 — CANADA (SUN) — From the Executive Committee of the ISKCON Governing Body Commission (GBC):
August 3, 2013
Dear Devotees of ISKCON,
Please accept our humble obeisances. All glories to Srila Prabhupada.
We regret to inform you that the GBC Executive Committee has received a letter from Mahanidhi Swami, a disciple of Srila Prabhupada since 1975, announcing that he has "decided to resign from the glorious preaching mission of ISKCON'.
Prior to receiving that letter, reports were brought to our attention alleging inappropriate behavior on the part of Mahanidhi Swami on both a personal and philosophical level. The GBC began an investigation of those and found some of the allegations to be true, including inappropriate interactions with a female disciple. Although the extent of those problems is not clear, we found there was definitely behavior not befitting someone in the renounced order of life.
It was during this investigation that Mahanidhi Swami chose to resign.
In a prayerful mood, we would like to comment briefly on this situation. As Vaishnavas, we understand that the obstacles of this material world are very difficult to overcome. Srila Prabhupada warned us that many stalwarts may fall from the path of Krishna consciousness if we are not cautious in the execution of our devotional service.
As stated in an official GBC paper in March of this year:
Those who accept the service of diksha or siksha guru within ISKCON are mandated to be strict followers of the instructions of Srila Prabhupada, and, as long as they follow, they are acting on the liberated platform. Thus they may serve, as Srila Prabhupada ordered, as bonafide representatives of the Lord and the Guru Parampara and be a via medium of Their mercy. Yet it should be clearly understood that if such diksha or siksha gurus deviate from strictly following, they may fall down from their position.
Therefore, we should all be careful to strictly follow the standards of Krishna consciousness as given to us by our Founder-Acarya and the previous acaryas. At the same time, Srila Prabhupada taught us to be concerned about the well being of our fellow Vaishnavas and to encourage each other to continue in devotional service to the best of our ability.
In that spirit, the GBC is continuing to reach out to Mahanidhi Swami. GBC members have also met with followers and disciples of Mahanidhi Swami to offer them our support.
We ask that the devotees of ISKCON pray for Mahanidhi Swami and the devotees affected by his difficulties. And as always, we offer our own humble prayers for all the Vaishnavas and the devotees of ISKCON and request Lord Krishna to kindly protect us and guide us all towards His eternal service.
