Devotional service means that we have to employ our energies for the purpose of Krishna Consciousness, and it does not matter what is the volume of such energy, because different persons have got different type of energies, but the best means is that one has to apply his energy as far as possible, that is the secret of success in Krishna Consciousness.

In reflecting a little on what Srila Prabhupada wrote here, I was thinking of the story in regards to Hanuman and the spider; the spider kicking in small grains of sand in his efforts to assist in building the bridge to Lanka. Hanuman seeing the spider, and thinking that one of the Varnars might accidentally crush it, Hanuman was going to remove the spider from where it was on the bridge, (and thus stop the spider from being able to continue in rendering his service to Lord Rama).

Lord Ramacandra then told Hanuman that the service being rendered by the spider, though externally appearing to be small and insignificant, was just as valuable to Him, Lord Rama, as that of Hanuman's throwing in of huge boulders, because the spider was rendering what service he was able, and doing so with the utmost of love.

Hanuman being of great intelligence, was also possessed of simplicity of heart.

While delivering Lord Ramacandra's message (with ring) to Sita Devi in the Asoka garden, Hanuman saw Sita Devi putting kumkum in the part of her hair, Hanuman's asking what was the purpose in Her doing this.

Replying that this was to give Lord Rama long life and to protect Him from calamities, Hanuman thought to Himself that if only a small amount of kumkum could protect Lord Ramacandra, then how much protected His Lord would be if He was to put a big amount on his own body. Thus, Hanuman covered His whole body with kumkum.

When returning to the army of Varnars, Sugriva seeing Hanuman covered with kumkum burst into laughter. Lord Ramacandra being very grave, asked Hanuman why He covered His body with kumkum in this way. When Hanuman gave His reply, Lord Ramacandra was so touched by this, that He declared that anyone who worshipped Hanuman with kumkum would receive His mercy and would be able to cross over all obstacles in devotional service.
