Now Those are beads!

I was in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, 1998, Security Forces Hospital, Malaaz Siteen Street, practising audiology, third best hospital in Riyadh, maybe top ten in the kingdom. We often had time to sit and chant, or sometimes smoke cigarettes and drink tea or coffee. I mostly did not join in with this, but joked or chanted, sometimes some tiny cups of sweetened cardamon flavored tea and dates...


The other audiologists and earnosethroat surgeons were sipping tea and smoking in our lounge. Two were chanting quietly on their hand-sized strings of Arab plastic prayer beads. That day, for fun, instead of my own Muslim style small set of thirty-three beads , I had brought my Vaisnava set of shiny well-used 108 wooden hand-finished Tulsi japa-mala beads. It was quite massive.

Before I go on, you should know that they are very religious in Saudia, and admire people who chant strands of as many as 66 or even 99 beads in length for rosar
