Another morning walk was during an unusually sunny day. Prabhupada stopped me and he said, “You stand right here and face the sun.” So, I did. He said, “See, you are looking at the sun, no shadow.” Then he said, “Now turn around.” So, I turned around and immediately, of course, I was in my shadow. He said, “Yes, you see? You turned around. So, if you face Krishna, there is no maya. But, as soon as you turn around, then there is shadow, which is maya.” Prabhupada gave a graphic example of that particular phrase. It became a banner on the cover of the Back to Godhead magazine.
Sivananda das: We were walking along the London pier and there was a tugboat that was bringing in a huge ocean liner. Prabhupada looked at that and said, “Ah! Look at this big powerful boat and little, tiny tugboat. A little, tiny tugboat is pulling the big ocean liner.” He said, “You see, this big ocean liner is very powerful. That little tugboat is not as powerful, but the big ocean liner has turned off its engines, and so now it’s being pulled along by the tugboat.” He said, “This is an example of us. If we turn off our Krishna conscious engine, then maya will pull us along. So, we have to have our Krishna conscious engine always on, and then in that way, we won’t be pulled along by maya.”
