"In the conditioned stage, one’s conceptions of life are sometimes polluted by passion and ignorance, which are exhibited by attachment, hostility, greed, lamentation, illusion, fear, madness, false prestige, insults, fault-finding, deception, envy, intolerance, passion, bewilderment, hunger and sleep. All of these are enemies. Sometimes one’s conceptions are also polluted by goodness."
His Divine Grace A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada, Founder-Acarya of the International Society for Krishna Consciousness Srimad-Bhagavatam : Canto 7: "The Science of God" : SB 7.15: Instructions for Civilized Human Beings : SB 7.15.43, SB 7.15.44, SB 7.15.43-44 : Translation
Dont worry. Your devotional service is not overly contaminated with goodness! lol
Im being a funny guy, but there are many example of devotees who cannot see the light of day due to some happiness derived from steady services in a nice temple, nice prasadam, nice devotees, then when the demon comes to poison you, you cant believe it because you are accustomed to everyone being so nice!
Another example, a pujari is accustomed to everything opulent. a poverty stricken beggar comes to the temple, and the pujari shuns the person, when in reality, that person is a great devotee. The pujari should or could have spoken to or honored the pure devotee. So this is an instance of the mode of goodness conditioning one in a way that is not beneficial for devotional service.
Perhaps a more obvious example is Krsna meeting with Radharani late in the groves of the beautiful Vrndavana forests. They in goodness might say, ah, this is illicit activity! but it is not, it is transcendental love of Godhead. Thus, goodness prevents their understanding.
Here at SPI i have made it a point not to wallow in the mode of goodness all the time. Hare Krsna Harihara
