He pulled his classic Olds 88 '98 over to the side of the country road, and stopped there. It was evening but not all dark, for city lights and radio towers and traffic overheadlamps still dotted the view, like distant stars and red pulsars.
It was empty on that prairie side road, just he and the fields and the grass and winds. But it felt good, just think on it, free at last ! Only he and his Creator to be beholden and responsible to, all friends and family basically dead or gone, or nonexistent, yet he felt more relief than sorrow. His duties were done, his job done, he could die now and it would be none the worse, his duty was fulfilled ! He could peacefully pass his last years in fulfillment and satisfaction.
He had been bold, even courageous, he had fought and won most, lost a few important fights, but he had stood to his principles and guns to the very last, almost no compromise. He felt that he may have even done a little small service.
