8.MEANING OF “ON MY ORDER, Āmāra ājñāya guru hañā, BE ACTUALLY GURU, BUT BY MY ORDER.”
GBC Meets with Srila Prabhupada - May 28, 1977, Vrndavana.
Srila Prabhupada after enunciating the first formality which refers to the period in which the guru is present,in the presence of the spiritual master, now he states the second formality which refers to the period during which the guru is no longer present.
Satsvarupa's question refers to this period of time, “AT THAT TIME WHEN you're no longer with us.”
During this second period, the etiquette, the formality, the law of disciplic succession says that:
“ON MY ORDER,
Āmāra ājñāya guru hañā ,
be ACTUALLY guru, BUT BY MY ORDER.”
“BUT by my order “ means that THE ONLY CAUSE by which one actually becomes guru is “my order, by my order, on my order”.
This is the requisite or inevitable condition to become actually guru: “by my order, on my order.”
One becomes guru “but by my order”:
1.Only the person who receives the order should become guru.
2.Therefore anyone who does not receive the order should not become guru.
WITHOUT THE ORDER nobody becomes guru, one should not become guru,no one should become guru.
This is the power of the guru according to the formality.
There are only two possible options:
1-WITH “my order” or
2-WITHOUT “my order”.
--
1.The option WITH MY ORDER, during the period which the guru is no longer present, SOMEONE can receive the order, this possibility exists, someone should become guru, actually guru.
BECAUSE this option means that SOMEONE can become a guru,
THEN this option does not meet the requirement no one should become guru, “one should not become guru”, and the immediate consequence is that in this circumstance there is no such consequence “on my behalf”.
On this option someone can become guru, give initiations on his own behalf, can accept his own disciples.
Only in this case, the disciple who has received the order, “who is initiating”, can accept his own disciples.
Srila Prabhupada says that in this particular case such disciple of my disciple will be my grand-disciple. He is grand-disciple.
Prabhupāda: He is granddisciple.
Prabhupāda: When I order, "You become guru," he becomes regular guru. That's all. He becomes disciple of my disciple. That's it.
Prabhupāda: On my order,Āmāra ājñāya guru hañā, be actually guru, but by my order.
--
2. The option WITHOUT MY ORDER,when no one receives the order, during the period which the guru is no longer present, means that no one should become guru, one should not become guru, not actually guru.
BECAUSE this option means that “one should not become guru”
THEN as we saw earlier during the first formality, according with the formality, the law, the same consequence or result will occur due to the same cause,”so on my behalf".
This option WITHOUT MY ORDER meet the requirement “one should not become guru”, and the immediate consequence according with the principle is ”so on my behalf”,”to act as officiating ācāryas” ,Ṛtvik.
BECAUSE there is no order for anyone, this means that “one should not become guru”,no one should become guru,so (that person who gives the initiation, who is initiating, he do it) on my behalf.
Again in this option occurs exactly the same as occurred during the presence of the spiritual master:
“BECAUSE there is no order one should not become guru, so on my behalf.”
so (“that person who gives the initiation, who is initiating, he do it”) on my behalf, meaning”to act as officiating ācāryas” ,Ṛtvik.
The law is that when a person who should not become guru performs the function of initiating, that person who gives the initiation, who is initiating, he do it “on my behalf”, he should not act on its own behalf.
On this case,BECAUSE no one should become guru,ONE SHOULD NOT BECOME GURU,one should not accept disciples,”SO ON MY BEHALF”.
Srila Prabhupada says that in this particular case, during the period which the guru is no longer present, BECAUSE there is no order for anyone, those who are initiated THEY ARE DISCIPLES,THEY´RE HIS DISCIPLES,they are NOT disciples of my disciples, they are NOT my grand-disciples.
Next we will see how the idea that on my behalf only refers to the period in which the guru is present is incorrect because it is not based on any information and go against the logic set forth by Srila Prabhupada. This is a misinterpretation.
Through the logical analysis established by Srila Prabhupada in these sentences we can verify how ON MY BEHALF is the consequence that occurs on two different occasions when one should not become guru, when no one should become guru:
1-during the presence of the guru, in my presence , and
2-in the absence or disappearance of the Spiritual master, when no one has received the order.
Therefore, Srila Prabhupada is saying that, by making use of the power granted him by formality or the law, he has given no order to anyone, and for this reason his disciples should not become spiritual masters, they should not accept disciples, but those whom he chooses, “some of you”, should act on his behalf, should give initiations on his behalf, they should act as officiating ācāryas.
“I shall recommend some of you to act as officiating ācāryas.”
