Walmart Admits: 'Our Profits' Depend on 'Their Poverty'

Critics cite irony of annual report filing: 'This is a company that everywhere it goes it creates poverty'

- Lauren McCauley, staff writer

A Penn State study found that in counties where Wal-Mart opens a store, poverty rates are negatively impacted. (Photo: Ian Turton/ Creative Commons/ Flickr)Although a notorious recipient of "corporate welfare," Walmart has now admitted that their massive profits also depend on the funding of food stamps and other public assistance programs.

In their annual report, filed with the Security and Exchange Commission last week, the retail giant lists factors that could potentially harm future profitability. Listed among items such as "economic conditions" and "consumer confidence," the company writes that changes in taxpayer-funded public assistance programs are also a major threat to their bottom line.

The company writes:

Our business operations are subject to numerous risks, factors and uncertai

9468776499?profile=original" Our teachings, which are coming through our parampara are true, coming from Mahaprabhu. They are our sadacara, our regulative principle. They are law for all humanity. And this law, this sadacara, has come down to us through parampara. If we disrespect it, if we don't execute in our life, if we add any deliberation, if we twist it, then we will become offenders. We will commit offence by not obeying the orders of guru. Yes, namaparadha. Then we will be far away from the lotus feet of our guru. Guru will never keep us at his lotus feet. If, in order to execute, to obey the order of my guru, it is needed to become very proud, I will never hesitate to become very proud. If it is needed to become an animal, I will never hesitate to become an animal. If it is needed to go to hell for my guru, I will never hesitate to do it. Do you follow me? That is how to execute the order of the guru. That is how to become a true follower of guru.

I will never hesitate to do it. I will never hear fro

"So we have to disturb them. That is our duty. We have to disturb these envious persons, “Hare Kṛṣṇa!” (laughter) That is our duty, to disturb them. And that is the greatest service. Just like a man is sleeping. And somebody is coming to kill him, and other friend, “Mr. such and such, wake up! Wake up! Wake up!” So he may say, “Why you are disturbing me?” But that is the greatest service, he’ll be saved. Māyā is coming to kill him, to send him to the darkest region of hell, and you are saving him, “Chant Hare Kṛṣṇa and be saved.”   Srila Prabhupada Dec 30, 1968

Śrīla Bhaktisiddhānta Sarasvatī Ṭhākura remarks in this connection that if one takes shelter of Lord Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu and Nityānanda, follows Their instructions to become more tolerant than the tree and humbler than the grass, and in this way chants the holy name of the Lord, very soon he achieves the platform of transcendental loving service to the Lord, and tears appear in his eyes. There are offenses to be considered in chanting the Hare Kṛṣṇa mahā-mantra, but there are no such considerations in chan

Dave Hodges on World Events

The Common Sense Show

SHEEP TO KNOWLEDGEThis Sunday evening, I am interviewing ex-CIA agent, Dr. Jim Garrow. Dr. Garrow maintains that a military coup, designed to rescue this country from the clutches of socialist tyranny is being considered. America’s last remaining, albeit long-shot hope, is to be rescued from the clutches of the New World Order by the military. However, history teaches that there can be no successful revolution without the popular support of the people. And in America, the support of the people refers to people that, we in the alternative media, refer to as the “sheep”. In other words, if we are going to be able to mount any kind of meaningful resistance to what is coming, we need to wake up a sizeable number of these slumbering Pollyanna types.

It is in this spirit that I write this article. I have created an article which is designed for the more awake among us to educate the sheep who think there is something nefarious about the constant stream of martial law drills which hav

Fence sitting and sentimentalism is for the weak...

"Without cheating anyone we should boldly speak the truth to everyone. If the truth is bitter or unpopular but bestows blessings on the living entities, we must speak it. This will not ultimately cause them anxiety.[.....].Unless we speak the truth boldly we cannot please guru and Gauranga. The more determined one is in devotional service, the bolder and more courageous he will be as a preacher. If I fail to speak the impartial truth because I might become unpopular, I have certainly abandoned the path of my disciplic succession and accepted an unauthorized path. In the end I will either find myself cheated or will become an atheist."

It's already too late to stop the ubiquitous tracking and monitoring of the public through biometrics, says Peter Waggett, Programme Leader at IBM's Emerging Technology Group. We need to stop worrying about prevention, and start working out how to make the most of data garnered from that kind of surveillance.

"We're fighting the wrong battle when we ask should we stop people being observed. That is not going to be feasible. We need to understand how to use that data better," urged Waggett, who was speaking as part of a Nesta panel debate on what biometrics mean for the future of privacy.

"I've been working in biometrics for 20 years, and it's reaching a tipping point where it's going to be impossible not to understand where people are and what they are doing. Everything will be monitored. It's part of the reason why when we put together the definition of biometrics it included biolo

A large study has linked several common anti-anxiety drugs and sleeping pills to an increased risk of death, although it’s not certain the drugs were the cause.

For more than seven years, researchers followed 34,727 people who filled prescriptions for anti-anxiety medications like Valium and Xanax, or sleep aids like Ambien, Sonata and Lunesta, comparing them with 69,418 controls who did not.

After adjusting for a wide variety of factors, the researchers found that people who took the drugs had more than double the risk of death. The study appears online in BMJ.

The researchers tried to account for the use of other prescribed drugs, age, smoking, alcohol use, socioeconomic status, and other health and behavioral characteristics. Most important, the investigators also controlled for sleep disorders, anxiety disorders and other psychiatric illnesses, all of which are risk factors for mortality.

The lead author, Dr. Scott Weich, a professo

Govinda Ghosh, Srila ; Disappearance

Govinda-Ghosh.jpg

As Kalavati-sakhi, Govinda Ghosh sings sweetly for Radha-Govindaji in Goloka Vrindavana. (In the image: Sakhis are singing for Shrimati Radharani). - See more at: http://gaudiyahistory.com/sri-govinda-ghosh/#sthash.p1yeHTe7.dpuf

Shri Govinda Ghosh was known for his sweet kirtans at the annual Jagannatha Ratha-Yatra festival. He and his two brothers, Vasudeva and Madhava, are eternal associates of Shri Chaitanya and Shri Nityananda. The Lord would immeditately begin dancing whenever the Ghosh brothers would sing. The Ghosh brothers preached throughout their lives with music and song.

Since he had no children, Govinda wondered who would perform his funeral rites. Shri Gopinatha, Govinda Ghosh's Deity, appeared in a dream promising that He Himself would do everything. Still today, the Gopinatha Deity arranges for the tirobhava mahotsava (disappearance day festival) of His pure Devotee, Govinda Ghosh.

Spiritual Master is A MUST!

Posted by Navīna Kṛṣṇa dāsī on January 29, 2012 at 15:30

Nectar of Devotion, excerpts from Introduction to NOD, by Srila Prabhupada

Similarly, we can offer many services with our bodily activities. But all such activities must be in relationship with Kṛṣṇa. This relationship is established by connecting oneself with the bona fide spiritual master who is the direct representative of Kṛṣṇa in disciplic succession. Therefore, the execution of Kṛṣṇa conscious activities with the body should be directed by the spiritual master and then performed with faith. The connection with the spiritual master is called initiation. From the date of initiation by the spiritual master, the connection between Kṛṣṇa and a person cultivating Kṛṣṇa consciousness is established. Without initiation by a bona fide spiritual master, the actual connection with Kṛṣṇa consciousness is never performed.

This cultivation of Kṛṣṇa consciousness i

Shrivasa Pandit Appearance

Shrivasa Pandit

Shrivasa lead his brothers Shri Rama, Shri Nidhi, and Shripati in their devotional lives of singing Krishna's names, worshiping the Lord, and bathing thrice daily in the Ganges. (In the wallpaper: Shrivasa Pandit, ISKCON Leicester, UK).

Shrivasa Pandit, fifth member of the Panca-tattva, Shri Krishna Chaitanya, Prabhu Nityananda, Shri Advaita, Gadadhara, Shrivasadi, Gaura Bhakta Vrinda lived in Navadwipa before the advent of Lord Chaitanya. Shrivasa lead his brothers Shri Rama, Shri Nidhi, and Shripati in their devotional lives of singing Krishna's names, worshiping the Lord, and bathing thrice daily in the Ganges.

Meeting with Shri Advaita Acharya Prabhu, they studied Bhagavatam and prayed for an incarnation of the Supreme Lord. Why did they pray? Because only an avatara of Krishna could reestablish Vaishnavism among the staunch atheists, logicians, and proud pandits harassing Nadia at that time.

Malini, wife of Shrivasa, was a constant friend of Sachi Devi. She served Nimai a
