Confession of Tamal Krsna Maharaj to Vrndavan Dasa concerning the ritvik system of initiation.

I Vrndavana Das joined the movement in the year 1978 in Singapore after reading Srila Prabhupada’s Bhagavad Gita and his very inspiring Back To Godhead Magazine. I was so overwhelmed and convinced i decided in giving myself to serving Srila Prabhupada. In the year 1979 I was initiated by Hansdutta Swami through the Zonal Guru System of initiation that was instituted by the GBC.

In my heart I was always wanting to serve Srila Prabhupada but I was told that Srila Prabhupada had now authorised some of his senior men to become his successor Gurus. Since this was the understanding back then I accepted it as an oder of Srila Prabhupada. Shortly after my initiation I learned that Hansadutta had fallen down, it came as a shock to me has there is no mention of guru falling down in any of Srila Prabhupada’s books. I was t

Now, from this we may take the lesson that in our fight with māyā we should not be in a position in which our strength, enthusiasm and senses will be unable to fight vigorously. Our Kṛṣṇa consciousness movement has actually declared war against the illusory energy, in which all the living entities are rotting in a false understanding of civilization. The soldiers in this Kṛṣṇa consciousness movement must always possess physical strength, enthusiasm and sensual power. To keep themselves fit, they must therefore place themselves in a normal condition of life. What constitutes a normal condition will not be the same for everyone, and therefore there are divisions of varṇāśrama—brāhmaṇa, kṣatriya, vaiśya, śūdra, brahmacarya, gṛhastha, vānaprastha and sannyāsa. Especially in this age, Kali-yuga, it is advised that no one take sannyāsa.

sannyāsaṁ pala-paitṛkam
devareṇa sutotpattiṁ

Prabhupāda: Kṛṣṇa's grace is always there, but we spoil Kṛṣṇa's grace. That is our business. "But Kṛṣṇa is giving us so much grace. Let us spoil it." That is our proposal. If there was no Kṛṣṇa's grace, how this institution would have come into existence? It was not possible, such a big institution, all by one man's endeavor, starting with forty rupees. Simply Kṛṣṇa's grace. So don't spoil that. This... This... That's not good. Then Kṛṣṇa will not help. Just like the father gives you money. If you squander that, He'll be very sorry. Tat te 'nukampāṁ susamīkṣamāṇaḥ (SB 10.14.8). "Oh, Kṛṣṇa is so kind by giving me this opportunity." You should take things like that, not that "For nothing the father has given me so much money. Let me squander it."

My instructions I have already given to you, how to chant the beads, and how to protect yourself from the offenses. I shall advise you again to chant always, increasing the counting, namely, 16 rounds is generally prescribed, but for the time being you can stop all other activities and increase the chanting to 64 rounds. Follow the rules and regulations strictly. If you want sex life, you are at liberty to get yourself married. But don't have illicit sex with some Māyā's representative. That won't help you in your spiritual advancement. We don't forbid sex life, but we cannot allow illicit sex. For a young man it is very difficult to check sex desire, therefore best thing is for him to get himself married, and live like a responsible gentleman. Irresponsible man cannot make progress materially, or spiritually.
