The initiation means bhajana-kriyā. Actually executing devotional service: initiation. And if one actually executes devotional service, then anartha-nivṛttiḥ syāt, then all nonsense habits will disappear. Then I'll not have to stress on the point these four regulative principles. Automatically it will go away. That is the test. How one has properly utilized his initiation will be tested that he has no more attraction for these four principles: illicit sex, intoxication, gambling, and meat-eating. They will automatically go. There is no need of asking. Anartha-nivṛttiḥ syāt. Then ruci. When one is freed from all these prohibitive principles, then he develops a taste, tato ruci. Tato niṣṭhā: then he's steadily confirmed. If one does not have proper formal initiation, then the mantras for proper Deity worship are unavailable, and so is gayatri.

Unless one is initiated by a bona fide spiritual master, all his devotional activities are useless

According to the Vaiṣṇava regulative principles, one must be initiated as a brāhmaṇa. The Hari-bhakti-vilāsa (2.6) quotes the following injunction from the Viṣṇu-yāmala:

adīkṣitasya vāmorukṛtaṁ sarvaṁ nirarthakam
paśu-yonim avāpnotidīkṣā-virahito janaḥ

“‘Unless one is initiated by a bona fide spiritual master, all his devotional activities are useless. A person who is not properly initiated can descend again into the animal species.’”

Hari-bhakti-vilāsa (2.10) further quotes:
ato guruṁ praṇamyaivaṁsarva-svaṁ vinivedya ca
gṛhṇīyād vaiṣṇavaṁ mantraṁdīkṣā-pūrvaṁ vidhānataḥ

“‘It is the duty of every human being to surrender to a bona fide spiritual master. Giving him everything — body, mind and intelligence — one must take Vaiṣṇava initiation from him.’”

The chanting of Hare Krsna is our main business; that is real initiation. And as you are all following my instruction in the matter the initiator is already there. Now the next initiation will be performed as a ceremony officially, of course that ceremony has value because the Name, holy name, will be delivered to the student from the disciplic succession, it has got value, but in spite of that, as you are going on chanting, please go on with this business sincerely and Krsna willing, I may be coming to you very soon. I have already written to Jayananda about this, so don't he impatient. Pray to Krsna that I may meet you very soon." (SPL to Tamala Krsna, 19th August, 1968)

Dear Members; there has been some misundertsanding recently about the initiation process via this website. I have not made it clear enough to date to the members in general, having only vaguely considered that such serious persons would join us. But we are finding that there is actually some interest. So here is the process; Candidates must announce their intent, and follow strictly the 4 regulative principles, and reach the point of chanting 16 rounds per day, for six months to a year, then they may apply for consideration of recommendation to Srila Prabhupada. There will then be up to a six month waiting period. Some books must be distributed, mantras memorized, daksina given, oath signed and original duplicate copy returned, and a fire sacrifice performed , then only a new Name is given, neck beads are to be worn, and one is only then now duly initiated as Srila Prabhupada's disciple.
