(7): No, but do we offer the prayer first to Śiva...?
Prabhupāda: That you do. There is no harm. Lord Śiva is also called Mahādeva. Amongst the demigods, he is the chief. So if you worship Lord Śiva... We also worship Śiva. It is not that we disrespect Śiva. We offer our utmost respect to Lord Śiva. But that does not mean that he is the Supreme Lord.
There is no harm. There is no harm. But you should understand what is Śiva and what is Viṣṇu. If you offer first prayer to Lord Śiva, there is no harm. It is good. He is... Vaiṣṇavānāṁ yathā śambhuḥ. He is our spiritual master. He is Vaiṣṇava. Why not offer first respect to him? But if you take Lord Śiva as the Supreme, that is insult.

Sri Krishnadasa Kaviraja Gosvami has described in Sri Chaitanya Charitamrita that the first sprout of the desire tree of devotion was manifested in the person of Sri Madhavendra Puri, and that sprout developed into a sapling in the person of Sri Ishvara Puri. Then, in the person of Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, Who was also the gardener Himself, that sapling became the trunk of an enormous tree, the desire tree of devotion. 

Sri Ishvara Puri, in his travels to various holy places, once came to Sridhama Navadvipa. At that time Sri Nimai Pandita was absorbed in His pastimes of learning. Ishvara Puri entered Nadiya nagara in disguise and thus no one could understand who he really was.

He was always absorbed in the mellows of devotion to Sri Krishna. He was thus extremely dear to Sri Krishna and he was an ocean of mercy. No one, however, could recognize him by his dress.

Ambika Kalna is an historic town for Gaudiya Vaisnavas. Situated 70 kilometers from Sri Mayapura Dhama it is the place where Lord Nityananda married Jahnava mata and her sister Vasudha. Just down the street is the home of Gauri das Pandit where Lord Caitanya and Lord Nityananda once visited to take prasadam. Gauri das Pandit’s famous Gaura Nitai deities are still being worshipped there. Local tradition says that in the temple is a copy of Bhagavad Gita written by the hand of Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu.

Krsna dasa Kaviraja Gosvami, in describing the branches of the main trunk (Nityananda) of the tree nurtured by Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu, praised Gauri dasa Pandita in this way:

"Gauri das Pandit's loving devotion was very intense and powerful. He especially empowered himself to deliver, as well as to receive, love of Krsna. He completely surrendered himself along with his caste distinction and his religious dictates at the lotus feet of Nityananda Prabhu. Lord Caitanya

The Embodiment of Kṛṣṇa's Mercy

We should understand a Vaiṣṇava never dies. A Vaiṣṇava has no birth and no death like an ordinary jīva. He is no ordinary jīva, he is beyond birth and death. As the Supreme Lord appears and disappears, similarly His dear devotee, Vaiṣṇava Thākura, appears and disappears.

“A Vaiṣṇava does not take birth under the jurisdiction of karmic law. His birth and disappearance are transcendental. The wise have declared that the servants of Viṣṇu are eternally engaged in the liberated service of the Lord and hence are free from the laws of material nature.” (Hari-bhakti-vilāsa, 10.113)

Question 1: How can one hear harikathā in the association of devotees when one is residing far away from them?

Answer: In our maṭhas, harikathā is being delivered all the time and everyone there is engaged in hari-seva. It is our foremost duty that, by all means, we should associate with devotees whose life and soul is service. Staying in a place where harikathā is absent is absolutely undesirable, even if that place is very comfortable and we are surrounded by loved ones. I am able to contemplate the special mercy of Mahāprabhu when I witness at every moment that, by the grace of Bhagavān, the topics of Śrī Hari are being discussed and everyone here is exhibiting the inclination toward divine service.

Those gentlemen who desire true welfare should visit the maṭha on occasion and listen to harikathā from śrī guru and the Vaiṣṇavas. Our taste for hearing harikathā and our inclination to serve Śrī Hari shall itself separate us from unfavourable association. And if we constantly beseech

"The sruti says that food is Brahman; food is rasa. Feeding people with this in mind will make the giver one with Brahman as well. It will enable all those involved to taste rasa--dynamic love of God."

Q. Devotees are known for distributing delicious vegetarian food offered to Krishna with little or no charge to the public. In the West they have been doing this at their temples as well as at music festivals and other popular events for almost fifty years. Interestingly, Walter Isaacson's biography of Steve Jobs relates how during his college years the late Apple co-founder regularly walked to the Krishna center in Portland, Oregon to chant, dance, and enjoy the free feast being served there. Lecturing at Stanford University, Jobs told students, "I would walk the seven miles across town every Sunday night to get one good meal a week at the Hare Krishna temple. I loved it."
